Frequently Asked Questions

  • Molly has gone through three months of training with IronHeart + daily continuing education training. Mold dogs are scent detection dogs. The training is similar to bomb and drug detection dogs.

  • We were told she is an Aussiedoodle, however, I’m not convinced. We are currently getting her embark tested. Once we have the results we will post them to our website and social media.

  • When Molly and I get to the home, I usually walk through and ask where the problem areas might be. I pick up any food or items that might be in the way. I then take Molly around and allow her to sniff around all the walls, upstairs and down depending on the home. If Molly marks on an area, I put a piece of blue tape on it. After Molly is finished, I put her back in her crate. I then go back in with my moisture meters and other tools and look around her marks for possible water intrusion issues. I also always try to get up in the attic and look at the HVAC as it is 1 of the 4 most common areas for mold in a home. I then go over these items with the client and answer their questions and direct them towards their next steps.

  • No, however I am personally in touch with a company who I have the utmost respect for their work and fully trust.

  • Molly’s results are immediate. I do not do air quality testing.

  • It really depends on the home. Some can take 10 minutes, some can take 2 hours.

  • It depends on the schedule for the week. If there is an emergency, I might be able to move clients around based on the problem at hand.

  • Potentially, but it isn’t something I’ll actively be seeking out. It would depend on the situation.

  • No. Dogs aren’t breathing what they sniff as it is a different function for them. They sniff 5 - 6 times per second. Dogs have approximately 100 million to 300 million scent receptors in their noses, depending on the breed. They have slits that allow the scents to come and go just as quickly as they sniff them.

Dogs can distinguish between individual components of a scent mixture, allowing them to identify specific smells even in the presence of many competing odors. This ability is due to the high number of olfactory receptors and the sophisticated processing capabilities of their brain. While sniffing mold constantly can harm a dog, Molly only sniffs two houses at most a day. Not all houses have detectable levels of mold, nor does Molly live in a moldy home. Molly is on a regular detox protocol and support to make sure her immune system is always at its best.
